Akwaaba Ghana!

I finally got to visit Ghana over a long weekend, not in the best circumstances ( had to attend a funeral but still...)

Me at the resort
We arrived in Accra International airport and went by road for about 2 hours to Elmina (formerly the Gold Coast). We stayed at the Elmina Beach Resort which is along the beach. We visited the Elmina town, the Methodist church and the Elmina Castle.

The Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1842, it was then transferred to the Dutch and
Elmina Castle
then the British until 1957 when it was given its independence. It was used as a trade port but also for the slave trade. Approximately, 400 million slaves were transported from that castle, and 60% died on route to the Americas. We took a tour round the castle and were shown the appalling living conditions of the slaves, the dungeons, the cells and governor's quarters - remarkably different to that of the slaves. An arrowing and disturbing tour.

Elmina Castle
Accra and Elmina are so different to Lagos. They were clean and not too crowded. Can't wait to visit Accra properly on the next trip.
